Watering Recommendations for Newly Seeded Lawns

1. For the first 4 weeks while the seed is germinating water lightly, frequently and consistently. Using an overhead sprinkler for 15 minutes 3 times a day should keep the soil constantly moist. If the newly germinating seed dries out, it will crack and die.

2. After 4 weeks most of the seed will be germinated, but the general appearance may still be quite thin and patchy. Over the next 3 weeks while the grass is thickening, reduce the frequency of watering to once every other day and increase to 20 minutes.

3. After 8 weeks reduce watering to 1 inch per week. To water accurately, place a straight sided cup under your sprinkler and time how long it takes to fill up to 1 inch (approximately 45 minutes 2 times a week).

Please keep in mind that these are only guidelines for you to follow. You must monitor your new lawn carefully, since drought or wet weather could change your needs. Individuals with sprinkler systems must also monitor their lawns and make the appropriate adjustments as needed.
