Three Early Blooms to Bring Color Back to Your Yard This Spring
You finally made it through another brutal Massachusetts winter. You did your spring cleaning and even had a spring cleanup done for your yard. But looking out into your outdoor space it feels a little lack luster. It’s still too early for a lot of your garden to have come back to life. But it doesn’t have to stay that way. Although some plants may take longer to come back there are others that are early spring bloomers. If you’re looking for a way to boost the color and vibrancy of your outdoor living space in the early spring, it might be worth it to incorporate the following flowers into your outdoor space either by planting them or adding them to container plantings.
Pansies
Pansies are one of the most popular flowers for early spring color. These hearty plants prefer cooler temperatures and grow stronger and produce more blooms when the temperatures are lower. Light frosts rarely harm them, and cooler temperatures helps them develop stronger stems and richer colors. Pansies can be planted as soon as the ground is workable in full sun. The earlier pansies are planted the longer the bloom time.
daffodils
Daffodils are another telltale sign of spring in Massachusetts. Depending on when the ground thaws daffodils begin to bloom in late March- early April. In some cases, they may even push through a light dusting of snow. Another great perk of daffodils is that rabbits tend to leave them alone. If you’re looking to add some early spring color to your yard daffodils are a fantastic choice.
hellebores
Hellebores are another early bloomer that can help bring color to your outdoor space in the early days of spring. Hellebores are elegant flowers with rose like blooms that appear in late March to early April. These flowers are remarkably cold tolerant, allowing them to thrive in early spring. They also have a great leaf color!
