Long Blossoming Perennials for Sunny Spots
Both annuals and perennials are staples in any garden and there are pros and cons to both. Annuals typically have a longer bloom time than perennials but only last one season, whereas perennials tend to have a shorter bloom time but grow to be more luscious and beautiful with each passing year. However, there are some perennials with longer blooming times. These make great choices for anyone’s garden as you get the best traits of annuals and perennials, with a longer bloom time and plants that come back after each winter stronger and more beautiful than before. Today we will take a look at the best long blossoming perennials for sunny areas in your garden.
Before we dive in, what do we mean by “long blossoming”? Although perennials are great additions to any garden, most perennials only bloom anywhere from two- four weeks. When we talk about a long blossoming perennial, it means these plants will blossom longer than this average, and usually bring color and vibrancy to a space for a couple of months.
Today we will talk about the best long blossoming perennials that thrive in sunlight in the New England area as this is our area of expertise. Perennial Landscape Corporation serves a variety of Massachusetts towns including Winchester, Concord, Lexington, Andover and regularly employs our expertise to design and install beautiful residential plantings in these communities.
coneflowers
Coneflowers are a great addition to any yard. Coneflowers are known for their daisy-like petals and come in a wide variety of colors. Coneflowers typically bloom for about two months from mid summer to early fall, bringing long lasting vibrancy to your garden.
Black Eyed Susans
Black Eyed Susan’s are another long blossoming perennial that can typically bring color and life to your garden starting in mid summer. Often these beautiful flowers remain blooming until the first frost of the season. There are also some varieties such as “Early Bird Gold” that may begin to blossom in the spring. These are a great option if you want to bring a gorgeous golden yellow beauty to your yard.
Day Lillies
Day Lilies are gorgeous golden flowers that have a distinct blooming pattern. Although the flower gets its name “Day Lily” from the fact that each individual flower blooms only for one day, each plant typically produces dozens of buds. These buds will open at different times over the course of several weeks, providing continuous color to your outdoor space. Additionally, some varieties of daylilies are rebloomers, meaning they can produce a second or third wave of flowers within one season.
peonies
Although peonies don’t actually have a long bloom life, typically blooming between seven to ten days, if you plant a variety of different peonies, you can have peonies blossoming for up to eight weeks from early to late spring. In order to have peony blooms for that long you would have to plant a mixture of woodland, tree, herbaceous and intersectional peonies and they would bloom in that order. Woodland peonies are typically the first peonies to bloom and require less sunlight than other varieties. Tree peonies would be the next to bloom and are known to grow taller and have bigger blooms than many other varieties. Herbaceous peonies would then bloom next and are known for being particularly fragrant. And lastly intersectional peonies, which are a hybrid between tree peonies and herbaceous peonies would bloom.
These are four stunning long blossoming perennials that thrive in the sunlight. These would all be great additions to any garden for prolonged beauty and color to your yard. Annuals are a great addition to any garden and can help bring much needed color and visual interest to an outdoor space. However, if you are aiming to have color year-round, it may take some more planning. If the prospect of researching the bloom times of different annuals and trying to create a schedule where your garden in always in bloom seems daunting, consider reaching out to a professional. Here at Perennial Landscape Corporation, we offer an annual bloom program, where we take the headache out of trying to ensure a beautiful garden. We could install pansies in the spring, impatiens in the summer and mums and kale in the fall. Whether you are looking for more color in one season, or all of them, Perennial can help with our annual bloom program.
