Grass Seeding, Hydroseeding and Sod Installation – Which Lawn Installation Method Makes the Most Sense for You?
You’re looking to have a luscious green lawn that serves as the base of the exterior of your home. Harsh weather, time spent running around outside with your children or your dog’s digging can cause your lawn to be lackluster and spotty. You are faced with how best to fix this problem. In this article, we will go over the most common lawn installation methods and their pros and cons, so you can determine what works best for you and your property.
There are three main methods of lawn installation:
grass seeding
Grass seeding is one of the most common and affordable ways to start or repair your lawn. This is the typical hand spreading of grass seed wherever you are hoping that it grows. It is also the method that takes the longest. It may take anywhere from 1-4 weeks for the new lawn to come in fully and up to a couple years to be considered mature. Additionally, the new seeds need to be watered and attended to multiple times a day to ensure the seeds take and create a nice, vibrant lawn. Grass seeding also means new seeds could be washed away by heavy rain and compete with weeds as they grow. However, regular grass seeding can also result in some of the healthiest and strongest lawns as the seeds germinate within the local soil, whereas with sod the lawn is transplanted into different soil than it originally grew in.
Hydroseeding
Hydroseeding is another common way to install a lawn. Hydroseeding is when a machine is used to spread a mixture of grass seed, water, mulch and “pulp” as opposed to typical grass seeding where only dry seed is spread. The pulp serves to keep the seeds moist and dark as seeds require warmth, darkness and moisture in order to germinate. This typically results in faster growth beginning between 1-2 weeks. While hydroseeding results in faster growth, hydroseeding can also be impacted by heavy rain, weed competition and need to be watered consistently in order for the grass seed to take.
Sod Installation
Sod is the fastest way to achieve a new lawn. Sod is a layer of pre-grown grass with soil and roots. Sod installation gives you a beautiful green lawn immediately, although it may take two to three weeks for the roots to take hold and for the lawn to be stable. Sod tends to be the most expensive option for lawn installation, especially when covering larger areas and it needs proper soil preparation and consistent watering for it to take root. But overall, sod is a great option for someone who wants instant results.
