Perennials and annuals are two classifications of plants commonly used in people’s gardens. You may find yourself wondering if perennials or annuals make the most sense for you. There are a lot of different factors to consider when trying to decide which to use in your garden. Perennials and annuals each have their own pros and cons. Here we have compiled the benefits and drawbacks to perennials and annuals to help you make a decision on what makes the most sense for you.

But first you may be wondering what is the difference between an annual and a perennial? To put it simply, annuals and perennials differ in the lengths of their life cycles. An annual is a type of plant that has a life cycle of one year. Perennials on the other hand have a lifespan of two or more years, meaning you plant them once and they come back year after year.

Perennials are a great choice for any garden as they will come back for years depending on the species of plant. Peonies, for example, can come back for decades. Perennials also usually come back stronger and more beautiful each year. However, there are a few drawbacks to perennials as well. Perennials typically have a shorter blooming season than annuals. Depending on the type of perennial they will bloom at different types of the year and with a bit of planning you can have more consistent color in your garden if you stagger the blooming seasons correctly. This does however require more forethought than simply planting annuals and enjoying their color and vibrancy more immediately. Perennials also tend to be a bit more expensive up front. However, due to their recurrence perennials usually end up being the cheaper option overall rather than replacing annuals each year.

One big benefit of annuals is they pretty much constantly bloom until the winter. They may even come back after winter if they are self seeding. They also tend to be cheaper than perennials. However, typically annuals will die after one season and will need to be replaced each year, meaning overall you will likely spend more money on annuals than perennials.

So, what is better- a perennial or an annual? It all depends on what your needs are for the plants you are looking to add to your garden. Usually, a mix of both perennials and annuals will create the best results if you are looking for a vibrant and colorful garden over time.
