Fall Blooms to Add to Your Garden
As summer comes to and end and fall begins to roll in, you may take a look at your garden and feel disheartened at the lack of color. You decide you will plant more in the spring for longer lasting color in your garden. But you don’t have to wait until next year to get some color back into your garden. Read on to learn about cool weather perennials and annuals and how they can be used to create color well into the fall season.
Cool weather annuals
Cool weather annuals can bring life back to your yard in the fall. Cool weather annuals are plants that thrive in lower temperatures, so they can be enjoyed throughout the fall and may even tolerate a light frost. Unlike perennials, annuals only bloom for one season. So cool weather annuals may bring immediate color to your garden, you will have to replant them each year to get that fall color. But choosing annuals each year means you can mix up your garden and bring new life to it each year.
Chrysanthemums
Chrysanthemums, commonly referred to as ‘mums’ are quintessential fall blooms here in Massachusetts. Mums are perfect for adding color to your garden in late summer and early fall and come in a wide variety of shapes and colors. With proper care mums can bring color back to your garden for up to eight weeks.
Pansies
Pansies thrive in cooler temperatures, making them a great source of early spring or fall color in your garden. Pansies require four to six hours of sunlight a day for optimal growth and blooms. Add these stunning flowers to your garden for some fall color.
Violets
These delicate and beautiful flowers make a great addition to any fall garden. Violets tend to have difficulty in the summer heat, but can make an appearance in fall when the temperatures start to cool down. With proper care, violets can bloom for around four to six weeks.
Cold weather perennials
Unlike annuals, cool weather perennials have the ability to establish strong enough roots to survive the winter. Though it is not guaranteed, when planted early enough and given ample time to put down roots these plants have a real shot at coming back the next year as well. They are a great addition to any fall garden for some later in the season color.
Asters
Asters can bring vivid color to your garden with their daisy like appearance. These flowers have beautiful pink and purple petals. They bloom in response to colder fall days and bring color to your garden as summer comes to the end and into the fall.
Autumn Joy Sedum
These long blooming plants have small pink flowers that turn to a rusty red color in the fall. These hearty flowers are best planted in full sun and are heat and drought tolerant. If you’re looking for an addition to your garden this fall, an Autumn Joy Sedum is a great option.
Black Eyed Susans
These beautiful perennials have bright yellow daisy like leaves and a dark center. They are great for attracting pollinators. Plant in full sun with well- draining soil for them to thrive. Although they are at peak bloom in the summer, many Black-Eyed Susans bloom well into the fall, which makes them a great candidate for fall plantings.
