The air has become crispier and chillier. The leaves have become a beautiful display of autumnal colors and then faded into a muted brown as they fall. Autumn is here. In Massachusetts the fall is marked by mild temperatures in comparison to our brutal winters. That means we should soak up as much of the outdoors as we can in these temperate conditions. A great way to utilize and heat up your outdoor living space is by having a firepit or outdoor fireplace installed. Imagine cozy fall nights roasting marshmallows over your firepit, or long nights of pleasant conversation with loved ones snuggled up by your outdoor fireplace. Firepits and fireplaces are some of the best ways to make the most of your outdoor living space in the fall.

These additions may also make you more likely to host gatherings or just sit on your patio and eat dinner out by your firepit or fireplace. It can create a relaxing environment that will make you want to use your outdoor space more.

insect repellant

The smoke from a firepit or fireplace serves as a natural insect repellant. Nothing is worse than trying to enjoy time outside in the summer or early fall and getting bitten to death by mosquitos. Burning wood solves this problem and leads to many evenings of uninterrupted enjoyment in your outdoor living space.

Types of Firepits and Fireplaces

There are a variety of different types of fire pits and fireplaces each with their own pros and cons. Which will be best depends on your space and needs.

Wood

Wood fire pits and fireplaces are what you may think of when you think of a typical fire pit/place. As the name would have you guess, these fires are fueled by wood. They are straight forward and come at a variety of price points. The great thing about a wood fireplace as opposed to a firepit is that the fireplace can be built with a chimney so the smoke will still be created and act as a natural insect repellant, but it will not be blowing directly onto you as you sit by and enjoy.

Natural Gas

Natural gas fire pits and fireplaces are fueled by natural gas, and it is extremely easy to use. Starting a fire is as simple as flipping a switch. Considering how easy they are, it is likely that you will get more use out of it compared to a wood burning fire pit or fireplace. Natural gas firepits are also able to be installed in a wider variety of places, including on decks. However, the installation of a natural gas fire pit or fireplace is contingent on being able to be hooked up to a natural gas line.

Propane

Propane fire pits are also extremely easy to use and another great option. They do however require the propane tanks to be refilled regularly and require some creativity to hide the unsightly and bulky cannisters.
